What to wear for Opening Day at the Del Mar Racetrack

I can’t believe it’s that time of year again for one of San Diego’s most fashionable affairs, Opening Day at the Del Mar Racetrack! On Wednesday July 18th, tens of thousands of people including San Diego’s who’s who attend in their best attire and headpiece to kick off the Del Mar Racing season!

I have been attending Opening Day for years and have tried all sorts of hats, fascinators, dresses which I’ll link here, here and here– however if you want a comfortable yet chic option (which tends to be my preference post-baby) I styled this beautiful maxi dress for a day at the races!

To encourage creativity there are hat contests, and if you have seen past contestants and winners you know innovation is at it’s best, they hold nothing back! I’m always in awe at some of these contestants’ masterpieces, so I can’t to see their creations this year.

If you have purchased seat tickets (that sell out when they go on sale a few months back) you don’t necessarily have to stay in them the whole time- people watching between horse races is at its prime! The fun part of Opening Day is walking around, checking out the different areas whether it’s the VIP tent or the inside of the track or the exclusive Turf Club, so there is a lot of people and a lot of walking. Make sure you have your flats or comfy shoes on-hand! Also make sure to hydrate, apply sunscreen and have fun!
